Abstract
Tomato is an important vegetable crop in Nigeria it is widely grown for home consumption and for sale. The demand for fresh tomato is very high both for domestic and market use. This research investigated the bacteria isolates associated with spoilt tomatoes. The tomato sample were procured from three different markets: Sabo, Jattu and Uchi market within Auchi metropolis, and were subsequently isolated in the laboratory after several serial dilutions using the spread plate method ie ming standard microbiological procedures. Four species of bacteria (Staphylacoccus aureus, Bacillus spp., Streptococcus spp. And Escherichia colij were isolated and characterized with plate count of 2.2 10 to 7.0 10 CFU/ml corresponding to the highest and lowest counts respectively being obtained. Staphylococcus aureus had the highest rate of occurrence (40%) while all others had 20% occurrence rate. Hence, it is deduced that consumption of spoilt tomatoes can be very dangerous to human health, since these organisms produces spores (fungi) and toxins (bacteria) tchat could lead to food poisoning that will result in a fatal outcome
