Abstract
This study sought to assess the effect of welding on the peak expiratory flow rate of welders in Igueben, Igueben Local Government Area. The sample population consisted of 50 individuals, with 25 being welders and the other 25 being non-welders. The average age of the sample population was 36.04±8.18 years, with a minimum age of 19 years and a maximum age of 48 years. The average age of welders was 36.44±8.57 years, while the average age of non-welders was 35.64±7.94 years. The results demonstrated the impact of welding on the peak expiratory flow rate. The peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) of welders was 620.00±18.48 L/Min, which was substantially more than the PEFR of non-welders, which was 474.00±25.82 L/Min. Consequently, welding had a notable effect on the peak expiratory flow rate. The study has indicated that Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (PEFR) is reduced in welders. In conclusion, it can be stated that welding without the use of personal protective equipment leads to specific impairments in pulmonary function, particularly of the obstructive type. It is important to evaluate the Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (PEFR) when assessing lung-related illnesses. Therefore, it is advisable for welders to utilize personal protection equipment in order to minimize the impact of welding fumes.
