Abstract
ABSTRACT This study investigates the antimicrobial resistance pattern of Streptococcus pneumoniae isolated from nasal swabs obtained from 100 children aged 0-10 years hospitalized in General Hospital Warri. The study aimed to determine the prevalence of S. pneumoniae among other bacterial isolates and to assess the antibiotic resistance of the isolates to commonly used antibiotics. Samples were obtained and subjected to standard microbiological method for isolation and identification. The prevalence of S. pneumoniae was found to be 15%, with a total of 15 isolates identified. Other bacterial species isolated included Staphylococcus species (45.4%), Haemophilus species (15.5%), Moraxella species (12.4%), Enterococcus species (6.2%), and Streptococcus agalactiae (5.6%). Antibiotic susceptibility testing revealed a concerning level of resistance, with 80% of the S. pneumoniae isolates exhibiting multidrug resistance (MDR). The high prevalence of MDR S. pneumoniae poses significant challenges to the effective management of pneumococcal infections in pediatric populations. These findings highlight the urgent need for continuous surveillance of antimicrobial resistance patterns and the implementation of robust antibiotic stewardship programs to mitigate the spread of resistant strains.
