Problems of Sport Participation Among Secondary School Students in Ado Ekiti Local Government Area of Ekiti State

This study assessed and evaluated the problems of sports participation among secondary school students in Ado Ekiti Local Government area of Ekiti. The study specifically identified some of the problems of sports participation among secondary schools in Ado Ekiti Local Government area and the relevance of students attitude, influence of teachers and the relevance of budgeting provision in the school sport participation among secondary school students. The study also further highlighted how availability of sports facilities, administration support and teachers attitude influence students sports participation in secondary schools in Ado Ekiti Local Government area of Ekiti State. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. The population of the study comprised all students in the public secondary school in Ado Local Government of Ekiti State. The sample for this study was two hundred (200) respondents which were selected from five (5) public secondary schools in Ado local Government area of Ekiti using simple random sampling technique. The instrument used for the study was a structured questionnaire constructed by the researcher. The instrument was validated by researcher’s supervisor yielding reliability. The data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The descriptive statistics of frequency counts, percentages and mean were used to answer the research questions. The study revealed the problems facing sport participation of secondary school students. It was found that lack of adequate sport equipment hinders students from participating in sport. Based on the findings it was found out that due to the unavailability of sports equipment and facilities, students skip sports sessions in secondary school. It was recommended among others that budget allocation should be given to sports as this will allow the uprading of sports facilities and also the acquisition of sport facilities.
