Abstract
The research was carried out to investigate the effects of spent engine oil (SEO) discharge on soil properties and heavy metals accumulation in selected automobile workshops in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State,Nigeria. Soil sample were collected in four different automobile workshops (ilokun, odoado, ajilosun and basiri) in Ado-Ekiti. Two sampling points were mapped out around each mechanic workshop at 0-15cm and 15-30cm depth. The results show the highest total N wast at basiri (2.8g/kg) while the highest available P was at 100m away from point of discharge and 8.28mg/kg was obtained at ajilosun. The exchangeable cations (ca mg k na) do not vary significantly with location and depth. Heavy metals accumulation at the various locations vary widely. While some are more than the permissible level (Cd exceeding the permissible limit), others are less (Pb), suggesting low level of contamination.
