Abstract
Amnesia, a phenomenon characterized by memory loss, may be caused by such factors as aging or neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's. The novel study took place using Wistar rats with scopolamine, as a compound that resembles memory disorders. Lutein, among the dietary carotenoids that demonstrate a neuroprotective function, was used to measure the alterations that this compound brings in the motor cortical cellular architecture. Thirty male Wistar rats were divided into six groups: placebo, active control (scopolamine which induces amnesia), three lutein dosage groups, and the standard Alzheimer's drug-donepezil treatment. After the end of the durational treatment, an assessment was done which ventured physical and mental tests. Data showed that lutein and donepezil have markedly enhanced cognitive function, this illustrates increased spontaneous alternation in maze tests according scopolamine group. Also, the lutein plus donepezil group performed better in the Rotarod and Handgrip tests as the number of errors they had was less than the scopolamine group, which might imply a better motor coordination. This study as a whole indicate that lutein has a cognitive and motor modulation action, which can be achieved through its neuroprotective effect against the neuron circuitry structure of the motor cortex. Such findings demonstrate lutein's therapeutic profile literally in amnestic conditions; these findings provide the clue how lutein can improve cognitive and strength functions in those conditions
