Abstract
This study investigated the impact of various dietary oil sources on haematological parameters in Adult male Wistar rats. Thirty-five Adult male Wistar rats, weighing 100 ± 20g, were acclimatized for 14 days. The rats were then divided into seven groups, receiving diets supplemented with 10g each of groundnut oil, margarine, butter, lard, olive oil, or palm oil for fourteen days. Haematological parameters, including packed cell volume (PCV), red blood cell count, haemoglobin level, white blood cell count, and platelet count, were assessed at the beginning and end of the two-week period using standardized laboratory techniques. The groundnut oil rich diet group produced a significant increase in PCV levels while the margarine produces a significant decrease compared to the control. Red blood cell count was significantly decreased in margarine group when compared to the control. Margarine and lard oil rich diet produced a significant decrease in haemoglobin level compared to the control. White blood cell count was significantly increased in margarine, butter and lard oil rich diet groups compared with the control. In margarine oil diet group, platelet count was significantly decreased compared to the control. These findings suggest that dietary oil consumption significantly influence haematological parameters in Adult male Wistar rats. KEYWORDS: haematological parameters, Wistar rats, oils.
