Abstract
ABSTRACT One plant gaining immense relevance in the medical field today is the tigernuts. The research studied the actions of the tigernuts on the human blood creatinine level in the overweight male human subjects under resting condition, and the possible mechanism(s) of action. A total of forty (40) male overweight subjects were involved in the study; who were nonhabitual tigernuts chewers and aged 18-28 years. On entering the Laboratory, the subjects relaxed for the duration of 1hour 30 minutes. Following the recording of the control subjects’ anthropometric data, their blood creatinine levels were estimated using Modified Jaffe’s Method, whereby creatinine in the sample reacted with Picrate in alkaline medium forming a coloured complex. The complex formation rate was measured in a short period to avoid interference. Concerning the tesst subjects, 5g of the tigernuts were given to each of them which was chewed as a bolus. After swallowing the tigernuts, 50ml of water was given to each volunteer to flush the chewed tigernuts down the gut. The subjects then rested for 1hour 30 minutes after which another blood creatinine level was measured. Statistical analyses were carried out using Graph Pad Prism Statistical Software Version 8.1. The results showed that the tigernuts reduced the blood creatinine level after its consumption (from 2.000 ± 0.1861 to 1.875 ± 0.165 mg/dl). But it was not statistically significant. Summarily, the tigernuts had a blood creatinine level lowering effects on the overweight male human subjects. Therefore, it could be recommended for a healthy kidney in the male overweight subjects.
