Histological Evaluation of Wound Healing Potential of Aloe Vera Leaf Gel and Acacia Nilotica Extract Using Wister Rats

ABSTRACT This study was done to evaluate the wound healing potential of Aloe vera and Acacia nilotica extracts on wister rats. This was done by macroscopical evaluation of different biophysical parameters like wound contraction rate and percentage of wound healing, and microscopically by assessing histopathological findings like presence of hair follicles, collagen, epithelial tissues and fibroblast cells. 12 healthy wister rats were used for this study, and examined for 13 days after wound creation and sacrificed on the 14th day for histopathological studies.Aloe vera and Acacia nilotica possess great therapeutic importance in traditional medicine. They have attracted the attention of modern medical fields due to their wide pharmacological applications. The bioactive substances in Aloe vera and Acacia nilotica proved to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiviral properties. Taken into consideration the long history of clinical applications of Aloe vera and Acacia nilotica in traditional medicine, especially for promoting the healing of cutaneous wounds with rare adverse effects, they provide cheap alternative to many expensive synthetic drugs. Recent techniques in tissue engineering created novel scaffolds based on Aloe gel extracts for wound healing applications. Nonetheless, further guided research is required to foster the development of Aloe vera and Acacia nilotica based scaffolds for the benefit of worldwide populations. In this study, I summarize the main events following wounding and the role of Aloe vera and Acacia nilotica in promoting the healing process. I hope to provide a solid piece of information that might be helpful for designing new research studies into this topic.
