Abstract
This study examined the effect of public perception of social media coverage of domestic violence against men in Nigeria. The study aimed to assess how social media platforms influence public awareness, attitudes, and opinions regarding male victims of domestic violence. Despite the increasing use of social media as a tool for advocacy and information dissemination, domestic violence against men remains a socially underreported and misunderstood issue in Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey design, using structured questionnaires to collect data from a cross-section of respondents across selected areas. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical methods. The findings revealed that while social media has significantly increased awareness about domestic violence, public perception is still largely influenced by gender stereotypes that portray men as aggressors rather than victims. The study also found that the credibility, frequency, and framing of social media coverage play a critical role in shaping public attitudes toward male victims. It was concluded that positive and balanced social media reporting could promote empathy, encourage help-seeking behavior, and foster policy reforms aimed at protecting all victims of domestic violence irrespective of gender. The study recommended that social media platforms, advocacy groups, and government agencies collaborate to promote unbiased reporting and create awareness campaigns that address the stigma associated with male victimization in Nigeria.
