Abstract
Introduction: Diarrhea is a major cause of morbidity and mortality among under-five children and accounts for 16% of child death annually in Nigeria. Mothers are critical in achieving reduction in diarrheal-related morbidity and mortality through their early intervention. And their knowledge and practice are essential. This study aims to assess the knowledge and practice of diarrheal management of mothers of under-five children in Kagoro, Kaura LGA, Kaduna State. Methodology: A cross sectional descriptive study was used to assess this knowledge and practice. Result: 306 (79.9%) and 255 (66.6%) defined diarrhea as passage of watery stools and passage of multiple stools in a day respectively. Known causes of diarrhea include: dirty environment (86.9%), infection (70.5%), poorly cooked food (79.9%), dirty water(85.9%). Sign of dehydration were known by a great proportion of the correspondence. 161 (42.0%) could correctly describe the preparation of ORS while only 44(11.5%) could correctly describe the preparation of SSS. Conclusion and recommendation: The study revealed there is disparity in the knowledge of diarrhea and its management. It is recommended that effort be made to improve the knowledge of diarrhea and its management in this rural community.
