Abstract
ABSTRACT This research examines the role of Nollywood films in fostering national unity, with particular focus on Tunde Kelani’s Thunderbolt and Femi Adebayo’s Seven Doors. The study explores how these films depict Nigeria’s cultural diversity and promote mutual understanding among the country’s major ethnic groups. Through qualitative content analysis, the research investigates key cinematic elements such as themes, characterisation, setting, language, and cultural representation that contribute to the promotion of unity. This research adopts a content analysis approach to examine how Nollywood films can be used as instruments for promoting national unity in Nigeria. By analyzing the thematic concerns, character representation, settings, language use, and cultural expressions within Thunderbolt and Seven Doors, the study explores how these films reflect and engage with the Nigerian experience in a way that encourages national cohesion. Findings reveal that Thunderbolt uses inter-ethnic romance and conflict resolution to highlight the importance of tolerance, trust, and breaking down stereotypes, while Seven Doors employs a blend of cultural traditions, multilingual dialogue, and shared community values to emphasize the necessity of collaboration in nation-building. Both films demonstrate Nollywood’s potential as a tool for cultural integration and national cohesion. The study concludes that the Nigerian film industry, when intentional in its storytelling, can serve as a unifying force in a multi-ethnic society. It recommends that filmmakers continue to produce works that celebrate diversity, address prejudices, and encourage dialogue among different ethnic groups to strengthen national unity.
