Abstract
Language plays a crucial role in shaping social attitudes and reinforcing gender norms. This study assesses the perception, awareness, and usage of non-sexist language among students and teachers in selected secondary schools in Ibadan. The research examines the extent to which individuals recognize gender-biased language, their attitudes toward non-sexist alternatives, and the factors influencing their language choices. A mixed-methods approach was employed, incorporating surveys and interviews to gather qualitative and quantitative data. The findings reveal varying levels of awareness and perception and usage of non-sexist language, influenced by factors such as education, cultural norms, and institutional policies. While some participants demonstrated an understanding of gender-inclusive language, many still showed resistance or unawareness due to established linguistic habits. The study highlights the need for increased advocacy and curriculum integration of non-sexist language to promote gender inclusivity in schools. It concludes with recommendations for educators and policymakers to foster a more gender-sensitive communication culture in secondary schools.
