Problems Militating Against Effective Teaching and Learning of Computer Science in Junior Secondary Schools in Jos North Metropolis

Abstract
ABSTRACT The study is focused on the problems militating against effective teaching and learning of Computer science in Junior Secondary Schools in Jos North Metropolis. Three research questions and two hypothesis was adopted for the study. The study adopted descriptive survey research design for the study. The study was conducted in Jos Plateau State, Nigeria with a target of 400 students and a sample size of 80. Stratified sampling technique was employed for sample selection. Data collection was carried out using a self-constructed questionnaire which was validated by three lecturers. The reliability coefficient of the questionnaire was determined using Cronbach's alpha coefficient. The questionnaire is distributed to the sample population using a direct delivery technique. The research questions and hypotheses was analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistical tools(mean, standard deviation, frequency and simple percentage). The obtained t-value was compared to a significance level of 0.05. Results of the independent t-test analysis indicated a significant difference in the correlation between teacher's competence and class size for effective teaching and learning of Computer Studies in Jos North Metropolis. The study findings showed that class size affects student's learning and performance in computer studies, makes computer learning of facilities inadequate, and leads to overstretching of available computer facilities. Furthermore, the provision of effective and efficient ICT facilities for effective teaching and learning of computer science is most required. By addressing the problems militating against effective teaching and learning of computer science, the study provides insights for educators, policy makers and the government, aiming to provide adequate ICT facilities as well as create an efficient and progressive environment for teaching and learning of computer science in Junior Secondary Schools.
