Abstract
The study examines the prevalence of malaria and associated risk factors among children in Ujoelen Community, Edo State, Nigeria. Malaria remains a major public health challenge, particularly affecting children due to their vulnerability and limited immunity. The objectives include determining malaria prevalence, assessing infection intensity, and evaluating risk factors. A cross-sectional sampling and data collection was carried out using microscopy, rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs), and questionnaires. A total of 84 children aged 0-12 years participated, with findings stratified by sex and age groups. A 67% malaria prevalence among children was revealed, with higher rates in males (37%) compared to females (30%). Children aged 6-12 exhibited the highest infection rates. Environmental factors like stagnant water and inadequate use of insecticide-treated nets were key risk factors. Preventive measures, such as regular insecticide use, were inconsistently applied, contributing to the high prevalence, therefore there is the need for intensified malaria control strategies, including community education, environmental management, and increased distribution of treated nets. Future research should focus on longitudinal studies to monitor the impact of interventions and explore additional risk factors. Collaborative efforts between public health authorities and the community are essential to reducing the malaria burden and achieving sustainable improvements in child health.
