Abstract
ABSTRACT Excessive sucrose consumption is known to cause metabolic and neurological disturbances, leading to oxidative stress and neurodegeneration. Selenium, an essential micronutrient with potent antioxidant properties, has been investigated for its potential neuroprotective effects. This study investigates the ability of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) to attenuate oxidative stress and neuronal damage induced by high sucrose diets. Drosophila melanogaster, also known as fruit flies was used as an experimental model for this study. A 6-days survival analysis was carried out to determine the treatment safe dose. The flies were divided into groups; control, high sucrose only and high sucrose fortified with SeNPs at different doses (0.1 mg/g, 0.2 mg/g and 0.4 mg/g) with a total of forty flies in each group. Biochemical parameters measured include climbing ability, monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity, nitrite levels, total thiol content, and glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity. The results revealed that flies fed with a high sucrose diet exhibited a significant (p
