Abstract
ABSTRACT This study aimed to investigate the presence of parasitic contamination in three local drinking water sources in Calabar South, Cross River State. The three sources included wells, rivers, and boreholes, which are commonly used by the local population for drinking water. The study utilized a cross-sectional design, with water samples collected from each source and analysed for the presence of parasites using standard laboratory techniques. The results of the study revealed that all three water sources were contaminated with various parasites, including Giardia, Cryptosporidium, Ascaris lumbricoide, Schistosoma spp and Entamoeba. The highest levels of contamination were found in the well water, followed by borehole water and river water. These findings highlight the potential health risks associated with drinking water from these sources, as parasitic contamination can lead to a range of waterborne diseases. Overall, this study underscores the importance of regular monitoring and treatment of drinking water sources to ensure the safety and well-being of the local population. Further research is needed to investigate the sources of parasitic contamination and to develop effective strategies for preventing waterborne diseases in the community.
