Abstract
This study explores the intricate relationship between leadership and governance in Nigeria, examining their combined influence on national development. It identifies corruption, political instability, poor policy implementation, and weak institutions as primary impediments to progress. Using a secondary research method, the study reviews existing literature, historical data, and government reports spanning from 1960 to 2024. It argues that effective leadership is the cornerstone of good governance and sustainable development. The study highlights the importance of ethical leadership, transparency, accountability, and citizen participation in governance. It further evaluates governance reforms and innovations, such as decentralisation and public-private partnerships, which could enhance service delivery. The research also stresses the critical role of civil society organisations in promoting accountability and bridging the gap between the government and the people. Drawing lessons from countries like Rwanda and Finland, it proposes that Nigeria can achieve equitable and sustainable progress through integrity-driven leadership and inclusive governance practices. Ultimately, the study concludes that national transformation in Nigeria depends on leadership committed to justice, efficiency, and social equity.
