Abstract
Abstract The project focuses on the design and construction of a manually operated paint mixing machine aimed at achieving homogeneity in paint production through effective dispersion of pigments and other components. The motivation behind this work stems from the need to improve upon the crude and inefficient traditional methods of paint mixing commonly used in Nigeria. The machine was designed using locally available materials such as mild steel for the body and cast iron for the bearings to ensure durability, affordability, and ease of maintenance. The constructed mixer operates manually through a shaft and gear system that transmits mechanical energy from a handle to a rotating agitator within a cylindrical mixing vessel. The efficiency of the mixing process depends on the force applied at the handle, aided by bearings and lubrication that enhance smooth rotation. This design offers a simple, low-cost, and environmentally friendly alternative to imported or industrial-scale mixers, making it suitable for small and medium-scale paint producers. The project demonstrates how indigenous technological innovation can enhance industrial productivity, promote self-reliance, and contribute to national economic development. It also highlights the importance of proper material selection, ergonomic design, and adherence to safety standards in machine construction. The paint mixing machine significantly reduces production time, increases output quality, and encourages local fabrication as a viable alternative to expensive foreign equipment.
