Abstract
Groundwater is a renewable yet a finite resource whose availability and sustainability depends on its recharge. The aim of this study was to make a comparative analysis between the hydrological, hydrogeological and geological characteristics of Ekpoma and Irrua, in order to investigate the possible causes of the lack of accessible groundwater in Ekpoma, and to proffer solutions to curb the problem. To investigate and solve the problem of groundwater in Ekpoma, various experiments were carried out on the soils in both regions. This was done to assess the characteristics ofthe soils and their impact on groundwater recharge. Results showed variations and similarities in the soil characteristics of both regions. Soils in Irrua showed had a higher infiltration capacity than the soils in Ekpoma. The characteriştics and features of both regions were compared. Lithological data obtained from hydrologists showed that Irrua has good deep soil sediments and aggregates to ensure adequate groundwater recharge while Ekpoma lacks these characteristics. From the result of the comparisons, it was inferred that the soils in the Ekpoma have the potentials to support a functional groundwater system. From the results of the experimentations and comparisons, measures to improve the soil in Ekpoma for adequate groundwater recharge were discussed.
