Abstract
Geopolymer concrete is a cement-free concrete where the binder is obtained from the reaction between a precursor and an alkaline activator solution. The precursor is a material with high silica (SiO2) and alumina (Al2O3) content, such as silica fume or fly ash. The alkaline activator solution can be sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or potassium hydroxide (KOH) and sodium silicate (Na2SiO3), or potassium silicate (K2SiO3). The aim of this research is to produce geopolymer concrete using waste wood ash. The objectives of the study is to determine the workability, strength properties, density and compressive strength of the geopolymer concrete. Geopolymer concrete is of good workability meaning that the slump test carried out was true. Geopolymer concrete shows the trend in variation of density ranging between 1.467–2.445g/cm3. It was observed that 28 days of curing has the best and highest density of 2.445g/cm3. The GPC has the maximum compressive strength at the 7 days curing of 8.13 N/mm2. It was concluded that the compressive strength of the concrete cubes decreased generally with increase in curing days. It was recommended that investigation on the possibilities of producing GPC in higher grade construction materials should be carried out.
