Abstract
ABSTRACT The bacteriological analysis of water from Afaha Oku Stream was carried out to determine the prevalence of Vibrio species in the water. The bacterial counts ranged from 4.3 to 8.4 X 105 CFU/ml, 2.3 to 3.8 X 102 CFU/ml, 1.3 to 4.9 X 102 CFU/ml and 1.4 to 2.6 X 102 CFU/ml for Total Heterotrophic Bacterial Count, Total Coliform Count, Faecal Coliform Count and Total Vibrio Count respectively. The species of Vibrio identified presumptively were V. cholerae, V. alginolyticus, V. fluvialis and V. parahaemolyticus. Test for sensitivity to different antibiotics showed that V. fluvialis was sensitive to both Ofloxacin (20mm) and Ciprofloxacin (22mm) and resistant to other antibiotics. Other species showed sensitivity to Ofloxacin (19mm-26mm), Ciprofloxacin (20mm-25mm), Peflacine (20mm-27mm) and Ceftriaxone (20mm – 28mm) while being resistant to Augmentin (8mm-12mm) and Ceflazidime (11mm-15mm). It is recommended that water should be properly treated before consumption and general use, provision of adequate sanitation measures and encouraging proper hygiene practices.
