Abstract
This study was carried out to assess "Impact of Social Media on the Political Views of Students Union Government in Osun State Polytechnic, Iree". The objective of the study is to examine whether students Union Government understand the work of democracy and part of the research question is does students Union Government understand the work of democracy? The study adopted Uses and Gratifications Theory and Innovation and Diffusion Theory. This was done using survey method which questionnaire was adopted as data collection instrument. Questionnaires were administered to 150 respondents using stratified sampling technique to sample among Ospoly students, who were research population of the study. Findings revealed that Nigerian students make use of social media to express themselves about happening in politics. It was also observed in the findings that Nigerian students participate in social media discussions on issues relating to governance in Nigeria. It was discovered in the findings that Nigerian students make use of social media to process political information which in turn enhances student's participation in political issues. This means that social media like facebook, /witter, whatapps etc enable the Nigerian students to deal and participate in political issues. It was recommended that the social media should be recognized as a veritable tool for aggregating public opinion by public office holders, and should encourage free expression therein, and let such views guide their activities. Nigerian students should not limit their activities to online media, but try to take these movements to the streets, offices and get involved more in offline activities. The percentage of offline activists is very low compared to the high number of online activists. Keywords: Social Media, Political View, Students, Students Union Government
