Abstract
This study examines the integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the teaching and learning of social studies in junior secondary schools in Ado Ekiti, Nigeria. Adopting a descriptive survey research design, the study utilized a structured questionnaire to gather data from 250 respondents comprising teachers and students. The findings revealed that while Information and Communication Technology tools, such as computers and internet access, are available to an extent, they remain insufficient and unreliable in most schools. Teachers' proficiency in Information and Communication Technology is moderate, with a lack of regular training limiting their ability to fully utilize digital tools. Challenges such as inadequate funding, poor internet connectivity, insufficient training, and resistance to change were identified as barriers to effective integration. However, the study highlighted the transformative potential of Information and Communication Technology in enhancing students' engagement, improving lesson interactivity, and fostering independent learning. Based on the findings, recommendations were made to improve Information and Communication Technology infrastructure, provide training for teachers, allocate adequate funding, and promote positive attitudes toward Information and Communication Technology adoption in classrooms. These measures are critical for ensuring the effective integration of Information and Communication Technology in social studies education and improving educational outcomes.
