Abstract

Due to the high cost of cement in concrete which has made construction much more expensive, periwinkle shell ash and quarry dust can be used as partial replacement for cement in concrete production. The aim of the study is to investigate the properties of the PSA and QD that partially replace the cement using scanning electron microscopy(sem) and fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy(ftir). The SEM and FTIR characterizations on the samples were carried out according to standards. From the analysis made we observed that the PSA have holes that enable water penetration and helps in binding thereby replacing the cement, while the QD has a smooth surface and is spherical in shape and it enhances workability in same way as the river sand. From the analysis and tests carried out on our samples it then implies that it can partially replace cement and fine aggregate(sand) in concrete production.
