Abstract
This study investigate effects of Carica papaya leaves extract on kidney injury of wistar rats following bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (BCCAO) to assess whether the extract mitigates renal damage, inflammation, oxidative stress, and functional impairment induced by BCCAO, a model of ischemia-reperfusion injury. Twenty- five wistar rats were assigned into five groups (n= 5), control, ischemic stroke only, ischemic stroke+ Carica papaya ( 200mg/kg), Carica papaya only, ischemic stroke+ vitamin E (100mg/kg), ischemic was induced through 30 minutes of bilateral common carotid artery occlusion followed by 1 hour of reperfusion. Oxidative stress markers (MDA, SOD, GSH, CAT, Kidney injury molecule-1, Cystacin C), inflammatory cytokines (IL-1, IL- 6, TNF-α) and histopathology were conducted. Results show that bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (BCCAO) significantly increase serum creatinine and Blood urine nitrogen (BUN) levels, indicating renal dysfunction. However treatment with Carica papaya leave extract significantly attenuated these increase and improved renal morphology, as evidenced by reduced tubular necrosis, glomerular damage and inflammation. This study recommended preliminary evidence supporting the therapeutic potential of Carica papaya in mitigation kidney injury associated with ischemic event like BCCAO.
