Abstract
The project "Development of an Improved Waste Incinerator" presents the design, fabrication, and evaluation of an innovative household incinerator aimed at addressing domestic waste management challenges while minimizing environmental impact. The prototype was constructed using cost-effective and durable materials including a mild steel outer casing, refractory-lined combustion chamber, stainless-steel waste grate, and an integrated ash collection system. Enhanced design features—such as an optimized airflow system, efficient waste support, and controlled combustion—were incorporated to achieve superior performance compared to conventional methods. Extensive performance testing was conducted using various types of household waste (organic, plastic, and mixed) under controlled conditions. Key metrics evaluated included combustion efficiency, burn rate, temperature distribution, and ash residue analysis. Results indicated that the incinerator achieved an average combustion efficiency of 86%, with waste reduction efficiencies reaching up to 90% and burn rates 40–50% higher than traditional incinerators. Additionally, the system maintained effective heat retention and produced minimal smoke emissions, thereby demonstrating both operational effectiveness and improved environmental performance. The study concludes that the improved waste incinerator offers a viable, sustainable solution for domestic waste disposal, particularly in low-resource settings. Recommendations for future work include optimizing emission control through real-time monitoring, exploring advanced material coatings to enhance durability, and integrating energy recovery systems to further elevate system efficiency and safety.
