Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of Safe Abortion Among Female Students of Tertiary Institutions in Owerri

Abstract
This was a descriptive study on Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of safe Abortion among Female Students of Tertiary Institutions in Owerri Imo state. The research was based on three objectives, which include to determine the level of Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of Safe Abortion among Female Students of Tertiary Institutions in Owerri Imo state. The study will change the Attitude towards Safe Abortion among Participants of Tertiary Institutions in Owerri thereby reducing the effects of unsafe abortion and also the level of practice of Safe Abortion among Female students of Tertiary Institutions in Owerri. 18 questionnaire was constructed and distributed to the respondents. The target population of 400 respondents was formulated from which a sample size of 200 was selected. Data was collected and analysed in tables and percentages. Findings showed that majority (94%) 188 of the respondents have heard of about Safe abortion. Also, majority 144 (73%) understands that Safe abortion is the termination of the product of conception before its complete gestation with the help of a certified Medical Personnel, rape social gratification and economic problems can lead to female students of Tertiary Institution into Safe abortion, Safe abortion is not sin, Safe abortion should be legalized. Abortion can lead to uterine rupture and vaginal bleeding. Unsafe abortion can lead to infection or infertility; unsafe abortion increases the mortality rate of the female. That’s why it should be done in the right place and by the right certified medical personnel to make it safe. Recommendation was made which include adequate sex education in homes, church and schools, also health authorities should use strict method in discouraging health workers (doctors, nurses) from getting involved in any case of safe abortion
