Abstract
ABSTRACT This Study investigates the Effect of Diuretics on Renal Function Indices. Twenty four female Wistar rats weighing between 88g-147g were used. They were subdivided into four groups – 1, 2, 3, and 4 of five rats (n=5 each). Group 1 serving as the Control group received normal feed and distilled water, Group 2 and 3 received 2.38mg/kg of Lasix and 3.64mg/kg of Aldactone respectively while Group 4 received 2.38mg/kg of Lasix and 3.64mg/kg of Aldactone simultaneously for 21 days. At the end of the experiment, the animals were sacrificed under ketamine anaesthesia to obtain blood samples for the estimation of renal function parameters. Serum Creatinine, Serum Urea (Blood Urea Nitrogen), Serum Electrolytes (Na+, K+, Cl-, HCO3), and Urine pH were analysed using standard analytical chemical methods. The result obtained from the study showed no significant difference in the serum electrolytes level (including creatine, potassium, chloride, sodium, bicarbonate and urea). In addition, there were no significant differences in the urine pH levels after Lasix and Aldactone administration. Therefore, 0.49-0.60ml of oral Lasix and 1.14-1.53ml of oral Aldactone could be administered in healthy individuals.
