Abstract
ABSTRACT Tamarind (Tamarindus indica) and its various parts, including the seeds, have been used for their medicinal properties. The study was conducted to screen for the phytochemical constituents of the aqueous seeds extract of the plant. The acute toxicity value and the effect of the aqueous extact of the seeds of T. indica on serum lipid profile were also measured in rats after fourteen days of daily oral administration of grade doses (200, 400 and 600 mg/kg body weight) of the extract. Phytochemical analysis of the T. indica seeds revealed the presence of Alkuloids. polyphenols. glycosides, saponins, tannins. flavonoids and cardiac glycoside. The concentration of polyphenols was found to be much higher than the other phytochemical components. The result of the oral acute toxicity study showed that LDso ofthe extract is greater than 5000 mg/kg. The result shows that the extract at 600mg/kg bodyweight significantly(p
