Abstract
This study examined the scope and dynamics of social media use among residents of Nsukka Urban. The researcher adopted the survey design, with a sampled population of 487,977projected from the 2006 population census. Using questionnaire to collect data from 384 respondents. The researcher employed a multi-stage sampling method which comprised of cluster sampling technique, simple random sampling technique and accidental sampling technique. Data were analysed both quantitatively and qualitatively, using SPSS and Microsoft Excel, 2016, mean and standard deviation with frequency tables used to represent the data generated. Findings from the study revealed thatsocial media is deeply integrated into the daily lives of residents in Nsukka Urban. Most respondents use social media frequently, spending substantial time on these platforms, engaging in various activities, and often finding it difficult to go a day without access. This shows the significant role social media plays in their personal and social routines.Findings revealed also that Nsukka Urban residents face significant challenges with social media use, including high data costs, concerns about misinformation, and negative impacts on mental health. These issues suggest that social media usage is not only limited by financial constraints but also affects the well-being and trust of users. The study recommends, among others, that social media platforms should prioritise combating misinformation by using algorithms and fact-checking tools, while also providing mental health resources for users struggling with the adverse effects of social media
