Effect of Fuel Subsidy Removal on Students’ Academic Performance in Tertiary Institutions in Sokoto State: a Study of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto

ABSTRACT The removal of fuel subsidies in Nigeria has precipitated a significant increase in transportation and living costs, adversely impacting students' academic performance at the tertiary level. This study examines the effects of fuel subsidy removal on the academic performance of students in the Faculty of Management Sciences at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS). Employing a descriptive survey research design, data were collected using structured questionnaires distributed to 400-level students of the 2023/2024 academic session. The study aims to assess the extent to which fuel subsidy removal affect students’ academic performance, while exploring the influence of socio-economic factors such as family income and parental occupation. Findings revealed that majority of students perceive fuel subsidy removal as detrimental to their academic performance, citing financial constrains that hinder their ability to afford essential educational materials, secure accommodations, and engage in extracurricular activities. The data analysis, conducted using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20, indicates a significant correlation between fuel subsidy removal and decreased academic achievement, increased absenteeism, and heightened financial difficulties. Furthermore, socio-economic factors significantly mediate the effect of this policy change on students’ educational outcomes. This study concludes that the removal of fuel subsidies has had profound and far-reaching implications for students in higher education, necessitating urgent attention from policymakers. Recommendations offered include the establishment of targeted financial aid programmes, enhanced academic support services, and increased mental health resources to ensure that students can effectively navigate the challenges posed by fuel subsidy removal. Overall, the findings underscore the importance of considering the education sector in economic policymaking, emphasizing that effective support systems are crucial for safeguarding students' academic success amidst economic reforms.
