The Influence of Social Media in Academic Performance of Nigeria Students as a Case Study University of Calabar Students

Abstract
ABSTRACT Social media misuse is an issue of concern and has prompted this research work . Individuals, Government, non governmental bodies and the society at large have expressed concern over the misuse of social media and the indulge in them. The objective of this study is to ascertain the effects of the social media on the academic performance of students in the university of calabar. The survey method was used for data collection. The sample of the study was made up of 80 respondents. The paper is anchored on two theories; the social learning theory developed by Bandura in 1976 and the uses and gratification theory postulated by Blamed and Katz in the 70s. Through the use of questionnaire it was discovered that the social media has contributed greatly to the poor academic performance of students. To this end, it was recommended that, universities should organize students forum which will serve as an enlightenment platform for students on the consequences of social media abuse. Also, students especially those willing to record huge success should guide themselves against the use of social media. The government, school and other well to do individuals should encourage hard work by rewarding successfully students through scholarship schemes and other incentives.
