Abstract
ABSTRACT Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease characterized by hyperglycemia, and alpha-glucosidase inhibitors are a key class of oral anti-diabetic drugs that regulate postprandial hyperglycemia. Chrysophyllum albidum (C. albidum), a tropical fruit, has been traditionally used in folk medicine for various ailments, including diabetes. This study aimed to investigate the inhibitory effects of C. albidum on alpha-glucosidase activity, a key enzyme in carbohydrate digestion. The IC50 values revealed that acarbose, a standard inhibitor, exhibited higher potency than C. albidum, but the latter still demonstrated significant inhibitory activity. Kinetic analysis showed a non-competitive inhibition pattern, indicating that C. albidum binds to a different site on the enzyme, altering both affinity and catalytic activity. The findings suggest C. albidum's potential as an adjunct in diabetes management, particularly in regulating postprandial hyperglycemia. This study provides valuable insights into the inhibitory effects of C. albidum on alpha-glucosidase activity, highlighting its potential as a natural adjunct in diabetes management. Further research is recommended to optimize the extract's potential, investigate the binding site, and evaluate efficacy and safety in vivo. The discovery of natural inhibitors like C. albidum may contribute to the development of novel anti-diabetic drugs, providing new avenues for the management of diabetes mellitus
