Abstract
This study examines the prospects and challenges of zoning elective positions in Nigerian democracy, focusing on the 2023 presidential elections in Kaduna South Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The zoning principle is aimed at promoting equity and regional balance in political representation, yet it remains a subject of controversy. The research adopts Game Theory to analyze the strategic interactions among political actors regarding zoning and its implications for Nigeria’s democratic system. Findings reveal that while zoning fosters inclusivity and reduces ethnic tensions, it also presents challenges such as marginalization of merit-based leadership, elite manipulation, and regional contestations. Recommendations include institutionalizing zoning through constitutional frameworks, ensuring transparency in its implementation, balancing equity with meritocracy, and strengthening public awareness to address misconceptions. This study highlights zoning as both a unifying and divisive tool within Nigeria’s evolving democratic landscape.
