The Role of Rural Tourism in Social-Economic Development; a Study of Ikogosi Warm Spring, Ekiti State

This study examined the role of rural tourism in socio-economic development, focusing on Ikogosi Warm Springs in Ekiti State. Specifically, the research evaluated the contribution of rural tourism to Ekiti's socio-economic development, assessed the effectiveness of marketing strategies to increase tourist inflows, analyzed the socio-economic impacts on local livelihoods, and identified infrastructural and investment challenges hindering Ikogosi’s full development as a tourism destination. The study used a descriptive survey design, gathering data from both primary and secondary sources. Primary data were collected via questionnaires, while secondary data were sourced from various publications. The population included stakeholders in rural tourism at Ikogosi, including local residents, tourists, and tourism operators. A total of 130 respondents were selected, representing a diverse group of stakeholders. Descriptive statistics, including frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, were used for data analysis. The findings revealed that Ikogosi Warm Springs significantly contributes to socio-economic development by boosting the local economy, creating employment, improving infrastructure in surrounding rural areas, and promoting local culture. Marketing strategies have proven effective in increasing tourist inflows, both domestically and internationally. Additionally, the Warm Springs positively impacts local livelihoods, enhancing income levels, government revenue, entrepreneurship, and public services such as healthcare and education. However, the development of Ikogosi as a rural tourism destination faces several challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, insufficient investment, lack of modern accommodations, and limited funding for site maintenance. The study concluded that while Ikogosi has significant socio-economic potential for Ekiti State, its growth is constrained by infrastructural and investment issues. It is recommended that the Ekiti State government prioritize upgrading road infrastructure, ensuring better access, especially during the rainy season, and investing in reliable utilities like electricity, water, and sanitation to enhance the site's appeal. Collaboration between government and private stakeholders is crucial for realizing Ikogosi's full tourism potential.
