Abstract
ABSTRACT Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder marked by persistent hyperglycemia due to insufficient insulin action or Secretion. Two group of feed were formulated, using different ratios of (Solanium aethiopicum, Glycine max, Eleusine coracana) and (Piper guinnense, Glycine max, and Eleusine coracana). Rats were divided into eight respective groups (4 groups each for the two formulated feeds) with each group having four rats. 150mg/kg body weight of alloxan monohydrate was Intraperitoneally administered to rat in group (I, II and 1V ) while group III of both sets was the normolglycaemic group. Rats with blood glucose ≥ 200mg/dL were considered diabetic.100g of the formulated feed was given to group (iv) of both sets and they were allowed to feed ad-libitum, group 1 was the negative control which was not treated, group II was administered a reference standard, metformin (5.5mg /kg). Blood glucose was monitored using exactive glucometer every other day for 10 days. Group IV rats treated with Piper guineense moderately decreased significantly from day zero (243.00±2.77) across to the last day of treatment (153.9 ± 1.30) while groups (IV) rats treated with Solanum aethipocum based feed show a lesser effect, with blood glucose coming up from (270.00± 0.23) to (288.9 ± 1.18 mg /dL). These results implies that both Piper guineense formulated feeds and Solanum aethopicum formulated feeds have potential for managing hypoglycemic conditions.
