Abstract
ABSTRACT This study investigates the potential influence of Telfera occidentalis ethanol leaf extract on the red blood cell (RBC) profile of male Wistar rats with acidified ethanol induced ulcers. Ulceration is a prevalent gastrointestinal disorder that can significantly impact the hematological parameters, including RBC count, hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit levels, and red cell indices. To explore the therapeutic potential of Telfera occidentalis in ulcer management, male Wistar rats were administered acetic acid to induce ulceration, and subsequently treated with Telfera occidentalis ethanol leaf extract. Blood samples were collected and analyzed for RBC parameters using standard hematological techniques. The results demonstrated that the Telfera occidentalis ethanol leaf extract exerted a positive effect on the RBC profile of the ulcerated rats, as evidenced by the restoration of RBC count, hemoglobin concentration, and hematocrit levels. Additionally, the red cell indices, such as mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), were found to be ameliorated following the treatment. These findings suggest that Telfera occidentalis ethanol leaf extract may hold promise as a potential adjunct therapy for improving the RBC profile in acetic acid-induced ulcerated male Wistar rats. However, further studies are warranted to elucidate the underlying mechanisms and assess its safety and efficacy for potential human applications.
