Abstract
ABSTRACT This study was carried out to evaluate extraction of essential oil from lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus) and formulation of deodorant (air freshener) from the extracted essential oil. The maximum essential oil of 2.17% yield were obtained at shorter extraction period without significant affect on their chemical constituents. The characterisation of the essential oil revealed iodine value of 23.59 + 0.12g/100g, saponification of 100.18+0.8mg KOH/g, peroxide value of 40.00+0.02meq/kg, acid value of 3.37+0.01mgKOH/g, ester value of 34.30+1.00mg/g and free fatty acids of 0.15+0.57%. The extracted essential oil was formulated into deodorant (air freshener) using a fixative and carrier solvent.
