Abstract
ABSTRACT This study investigates the discourse features in Bandele and Gyang's TV series Blood Sisters, to uncover how language shapes character interactions and reflects social issues. It studies how the conversations of the characters are laced with encoded meanings beyond the literal interpretation conveying significant messages to the audience. Employing context of situation as its theoretical framework, the study examines key discourse concepts such as cohesion, coherence, presupposition, implicature, and turn-taking in selected dialogues, focusing on how immediate social relationships and cultural contexts influence language use. The findings reveal that the discourse features significantly enhance the narrative depth, addressing complex themes such as domestic violence, self-defence homicide, unbiased justice, and sibling rivalry. Its cohesive and coherent features create a unified narrative, while its presuppositions and implicatures provide insights into character motivations and power dynamics through implied assumptions, and its turn-taking serves to manage conversation flow. Above all, the study concludes that Bandele and Gyang skillfully weave a universal story of domestic violence in a uniquely African way thus inspiring reflection on pressing social issues in Nigeria.
