Abstract
ABSTRACT This study investigated the heavy metal contamination of soya beans sourced from the Jauro-ganah community in Ardo-Kola Local Government Area of Taraba State, Nigeria. Soya beans (Glycine max) are recognized for their nutritional value but pose potential health risks due to their ability to absorb heavy metals from contaminated soil, water, and air. The primary aim was to analyze the concentrations of heavy metals, specifically lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), and nickel (Ni), using advanced analytical techniques such as Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) and Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). A total of 15 samples were collected from various vendors, and rigorous laboratory procedures were employed for sample preparation and analysis. Results indicated that the concentrations of Pb (0.247 ppm) and Ni (0.200 ppm) were within permissible limits established by WHO and FAO, while Cd (0.0037 ppm) and Cr (0.007 ppm) levels were significantly lower, suggesting minimal contamination. Despite these findings, the presence of heavy metals, particularly lead, raises concerns regarding long-term health risks associated with chronic consumption. The study underlines the need for continuous monitoring of heavy metal levels in agricultural products to safeguard public health and mitigate potential risks arising from environmental contaminants. Finally the study recommends that, implementing stricter agricultural practices, enhancing community awareness, and developing policies for regular surveillance of heavy metals in food crops to ensure the safety and quality of soya beans consumed in the Jauro-ganah community.
