Abstract
ABSTRACT This study investigates the presence of herbicide residues in subsoil samples from Lau Local Government Area, Taraba State, Nigeria, and assesses the physicochemical properties of the soil. The research focuses on both selective and non-selective herbicides, including their degradation products, and compares the findings with the maximum residue limits (MRLs) set by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The study aims to determine the impact of herbicide residues on soil quality and the potential risks to human health and the environment. The results indicate that the concentrations of herbicides such as Heptachlor, Glyphosate, and Aldrin were below the detection limit (BDL), suggesting that these compounds were either not present or present at very low levels in the soil samples. The physicochemical properties of the soil, including pH, total organic carbon (TOC), and total organic matter (TOM), were found to be within acceptable ranges for agricultural productivity. The soil was slightly acidic to neutral, with a sandy loam texture, which is typical for the region.
