Abstract
ABSTRACT This study analyzes the socioeconomic factors influencing household food choice and nutritional status in Jalingo Local Government Area of Taraba State. The research examines how income levels, education, household size, cultural beliefs, and market accessibility impact dietary preferences and nutritional well-being. Using a mixed-method approach, data were collected from 150 households through structured questionnaires and interviews. Descriptive and inferential statistical tools were employed to analyze the data. The findings reveal that income and education are significant determinants of food choice, with higher-income households exhibiting a preference for diverse and nutrient-rich diets. Conversely, low-income households are constrained to staple foods, leading to poor nutritional outcomes. Household size also plays a crucial role, as larger families struggle to meet the nutritional needs of all members. Cultural practices and limited access to markets further exacerbate food insecurity and malnutrition in some communities. The study concludes that improving household income, enhancing education on nutrition, and increasing access to affordable and nutritious food can significantly improve dietary choices and nutritional status. The findings underscore the need for targeted interventions and policies that address the socioeconomic disparities affecting food security and nutrition in Jalingo. Recommendations are provided for policymakers, health practitioners, and stakeholders to promote sustainable solutions.
