Effect of Post-Harvest Losses on Farming Rice Income in Kura Local Government Area, Kano State

Abstract
This study examined on the Effect of Post-harvest Losses on Rice farmers’ income Kura local Government area of Kano State, Nigeria. A multi-stage sampling technique was employed for collection of primary data from a sample of one hundred and twenty (120) rice farmers in the study area. Analytical tools used were; descriptive statistics, farm budgeting models, and regression analytical tool. Findings indicated that most of the farmers are male and Majority were younger age (20-30 years) and have had substantial experience in rice production. The net farm income analysis showed that rice production was profitable (N580, 000/ha). It was revealed from the finding that the major causes of post-harvest losses include lack of post-harvest technology, Lack of in adequate storages facility, provision of well security. The study also found that the major problems encountered in rice production include lack of timely access to improve seed and other inputs, pest and disease, and inadequate knowledge of post-harvest. It was also found from the result that drying and storage significantly affect post-harvest losses. The result of the research recommend that more research should be conducted on the harvest and post-harvest losses once to see more of its impact to the economy, Government and all actors in agriculture should provide subsidy to agricultural inputs.
