Awareness of Attitudinal Disposition Sex Education Among Senior Secondary School Students in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State

Abstract
This study examines the awareness and attitudinal disposition of senior secondary school students in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, towards sex education. The purpose of the study is to evaluate students' knowledge, perceptions, and factors influencing their attitudes, including cultural, religious, and familial influences. A descriptive survey research design was adopted, utilizing a structured questionnaire administered to a sample of 200 senior secondary school students selected through stratified random sampling. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical methods. Findings reveal that while students possess a moderate level of awareness of sex education topics such as reproductive health and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), cultural and religious influences significantly impact their attitudes and willingness to engage with sex education programs. Many students expressed discomfort discussing sexual health topics due to prevailing societal norms and parental attitudes. Furthermore, the study found that current sex education programs in schools are not comprehensive enough to address students' needs effectively, with gaps in coverage and delivery methods. Based on the findings, the study recommends the development of culturally sensitive and comprehensive sex education programs tailored to the local context. Schools should involve parents and religious leaders in sex education initiatives to foster acceptance and support. Additionally, teacher training programs should be enhanced to equip educators with the necessary skills to deliver sex education effectively and address students' concerns in a sensitive manner. These recommendations aim to improve students' knowledge and attitudes towards sex education, ultimately contributing to better health outcomes and informed decision-making among adolescents in Ado-Ekiti.
