Abstract
This study explores the role of the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) in enhancing academic engagement and performance among undergraduates at the University of Ilorin. The increasing integration of digital platforms in higher education makes it vital to understand their effectiveness in improving students’ learning experiences. Specifically, the study seeks to: assess the frequency of Canvas LMS usage among students; examine its role in academic engagement; evaluate its impact on academic performance; and identify strategies to enhance its effectiveness for student learning. The research adopted a descriptive survey design. The population consisted of all undergraduates in the University of Ilorin. A multi-stage sampling technique was employed: simple random sampling was used to select five faculties; proportionate sampling was used to pick students from each faculty; and convenience sampling was used to select 130 respondents based on availability and accessibility. A structured questionnaire was the primary instrument for data collection, and the data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings revealed that Canvas LMS is frequently used by students to support academic activities, including checking announcements, accessing course materials, submitting assignments, tracking grades, and participating in learning activities. The system significantly enhances academic engagement by promoting flexibility, organization, and interactive learning. It also improves academic performance by offering personalized learning experiences, timely feedback, and better access to resources. The study further revealed that there are no significant differences in Canvas usage and its impact on academic engagement and performance across gender or faculties. Additionally, students suggested improvements such as enhanced interactivity, more visual content, personalized feedback, and real-time communication features to further boost engagement and performance. Canvas LMS plays a crucial role in supporting academic success among University of Ilorin undergraduates. Its frequent and effective use highlights its value as a modern educational tool that fosters student-centered learning. Based on these findings, it was recommended that institutions invest in training programs for staff and students to maximize Canvas features, address infrastructural challenges such as poor internet access and power supply, and continuously update the system to meet evolving academic needs. Implementing these strategies will not only enhance the learning experience but also promote digital equity and academic excellence across the university system.
