Assessment of Undergraduate Students’ Use of Artificial Intelligence (ai) for Career Readiness at the University of Ilorin

Abstract
ABSTRACT Artificial Intelligence (AI) is playing an increasingly significant role in shaping students’ career readiness, particularly in today’s evolving digital economy. From skill development to job preparation, While AI tools such as ChatGPT, LinkedIn AI, and resume builders are designed to support employability and workplace preparedness, the level of awareness, utilization, and perception among Nigerian undergraduates remains underexplored.This study assessed undergraduate students’ awareness, utilization, perception, and challenges regarding AI tools for career readiness at the University of Ilorin. A descriptive survey research design was adopted. A total of 200 students were selected across multiple faculties using a multistage sampling technique. A researcher-designed questionnaire was used as the main instrument for data collection. The instruments were validated by experts and analyzed using descriptive (frequencies, percentages, means) and inferential statistics (t-test and ANOVA) through SPSS version 22. The findings revealed that: 1. Undergraduate students at the University of Ilorin demonstrated a high level of awareness regarding the availability and purpose of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools for career readiness. 2. Students actively utilized AI platforms such as ChatGPT and LinkedIn AI for tasks including resume development, job search, interview preparation, and career goal tracking. 3. The major challenges affecting AI tool adoption among students included limited institutional support, lack of technical knowledge, and internet/data affordability. 4. AI tools were perceived by students as effective in enhancing career decision- making, skill development, and alignment with industry demands. 5. The level of institutional support for AI integration in career development was found to be moderate, suggesting the need for improved training, infrastructure, and awareness initiatives. 6. A statistically significant difference existed based on gender, with male students demonstrating higher usage than female students. A statistically significant difference also existed based on age group, with students aged 26– 30 reporting the highest usage of AI tools for career-related purposes. In conclusion, the study revealed that while students are open to adopting AI tools for career readiness and recognize their benefits, limitations such as institutional gaps, affordability, and digital inequalities still hinder full adoption. It is recommended that Nigerian universities invest in AI literacy programs, enhance access to digital infrastructure, and embed AI-based career support systems into university development strategies to equip students for the dynamic demands of the global workforce.
