Factors Affecting the Choice of Traditional Birth Place Among Childbearing Women in Uyo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State

Abstract
ABSTRACT This study investigated factors affecting the choice of traditional birthplace among childbearing women in Uyo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State. The specific objectives of the study were to; examine whether socioeconomic status (income, education and occupation) influence the choice of birthplace among childbearing women; examine the level of awareness of the women regarding safe childbirth practices; investigate how the availability and accessibility of traditional birthplace influence the choice of childbirth place and to identify cultural practices influencing the choice of childbirth place among childbearing women. The study was carried out at Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. The study used survey design to select samples. Data were collected using questionnaire. A total of 385 respondents were sampled. The data collected were analyzed through simple percentage. The study found out a positive influence of socioeconomic status, awareness of safe childbirth practices, the availability and accessibility of birthplace, and cultural practices on the choice of traditional birthplace by women. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that, Healthcare providers and professionals should receive cultural sensitivity training to better understand and respect the cultural practices and beliefs of the communities they serve. This will help foster trust and open communication with women who opt for traditional childbirth settings and increase efforts to promote awareness of safe childbirth practices, regardless of the birthing place.
