Assessment of Multiple Taxation on the Business Survival of Small and Medium Businesses in Abeokuta

Abstract
The study aim was to examine the assessment of multiple taxation on the business survival of small and medium businesses in Abeokuta. Taxes are compulsory levies by government on personal income (Salary), business profit, interest, dividend and commission; Multiple taxes are taxes imposed by the state and local government are duplication under different names and some are not backed by any law of the Federation which affect the survival of small scale business in Nigeria. The study objective was to examine the relationship between multiple taxation and SMBs in Abeokuta and also to find out the effect of multiple taxation on the growth and development of SMBs in Abeokuta. Survey research design with the use of questionnaire was adopted for the methodology. Primary data was used as the main sources of data collection also questionnaire was used to gather the necessary fact from the respondent. The result from the hypothesis tested reveal that multiple taxation has significant effect on SMBs survival in Ogun State. The findings of the study shows that also showed that multiple taxes enhancement generate higher productivity and boost economy development. Finding also found that lack of proper enlightenment affect tax compliance among the SMEs. Study concluded that multiple taxations affect the survival and growth of SMBs in Abeokuta, Ogun State. Recommendations from the study revealed that taxes should he collected in relation to the sizes and profit of SMEs considering all other factors that can constrain the progress of such SMEs as there is a relationship between SMEs sizes and their ability to pay taxes.
