Abstract
ABSTRACT The study examines the accessibility of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in commercial buildings in Osogbo, Osun State, assessing compliance with disability laws and identifying key barriers. Focusing on Osun Shopping Mall, Lead Superstore, New Orisunmibare Market, and Trade Fair Complex, data were collected through interviews with PWDs and questionnaires administered to building owners and managers. Findings reveal significant accessibility challenges, particularly for individuals with mobility impairments. Structural barriers such as the absence of ramps, elevators, and wide doorways restrict independent access. Restroom facilities are often inadequate due to narrow entrances and limited maneuvering space, while poorly marked accessible parking and insufficient signage hinder navigation. Weak enforcement of disability laws, lack of awareness, and financial constraints further limit accessibility improvements. The study concludes that commercial buildings in Osogbo remain largely inaccessible due to poor design, inadequate enforcement, and limited awareness among building owners. To address these issues, the study recommends infrastructure upgrades incorporating universal design principles, government incentives for accessibility improvements, stricter compliance measures, public awareness campaigns, and staff training on disability inclusion. Implementing these measures can enhance accessibility and ensure equal opportunities for PWDs in commercial spaces.
